President’s Report

Graham Andrews.

In this Report I’d like to pay particular tribute to Graham Andrews, until recently the Executive Editor of the journal (Australian Biologist) and the issues which comprised the inaugural Volume of the Newsletter. Graham has been a stalwart of the preparation and delivery of the Institute’s publications for more than a decade. This has involved liaising with the Editorial Board, the Scientific Editor, the Executive and for some issues (e.g. Conference Proceedings) a Commissioned Editor to prepare material electronically for publication, as well as having a part in the "downstream" events (printing, distribution, etc.).

It is not surprising that, after such long service, Graham opted not to seek reappointment. A special resolution was passed at the AGM to formalise the Institute’s thanks to Graham, and I’d like through this column to make that a statement on behalf of all members. Not surprisingly, it has not been easy to find a replacement. The Executive is examining various models for management of the Institute’s publications.

2001 Symposium.

The planning for this has commenced. The details are: a Symposium held jointly with the CRC for Biological Control of Pest Animals, at the CSIRO Discovery Centre in Canberra on the (Saturday/Sunday) 22nd and 23rd September 2001. Please note it in your diaries.

Australian Biologist — Abstracts Issue.

The inaugural "abstracts of theses" issue of Australian Biologist was published earlier this year, and has stimulated a lot of interest amongst members and other readers of the journal. Vice President Bob Hill, who should take the credit for this successful venture, has received already a number of submissions for the next issue. With the academic year finishing, we can anticipate the imminent appearance of more relevant material. If you are supervising students whose theses are imminent (or recently submitted) and you’d like to arrange the inclusion of the abstract/summary in the journal and on the web site, please contact Professor Hill (details on the last page of the Newsletter — email bob.hill@adelaide.edu.au).
